What are the things to be considered while conducting team building activities?

In an environment where employees are encouraged to score individual accomplishments and come on top of the competition, it is very difficult to build a sense of team among your employees. Moreover, the corporate culture per se is such that it singles out individuals to appreciate and reward accomplishments rather than reward them for their team play. Such strategies may improve individual productivity but not the team. So, can team building exercises work as icebreakers here? What are the activities that can be fun and entertaining, helping in building a stronger team?
